Chiropractic uses precise manipulation to realign the skeletal structure. Chiropractors use their hands to diagnose and treat disorders of the spine, joints and muscles.
Here at Taunton Chiropractors Centre, we offer physical therapy as well as spinal manipulation. Your chiropractor will also give advice on ergonomics, exercise, and proper body mechanics to prevent back pain.
Chiropractors often give their patients stretching and strengthening exercises to do, as lengthening and strengthening various muscle groups help keep the spine in proper alignment.
Chiropractors often work with massage therapists in treating back pain. Tight, tense muscles can pull the vertebrae out of alignment.
Once the chiropractor has made an adjustment to the spine, stretching the muscles can help keep the adjustment in place. It also helps the chiropractor to perform an adjustment on a person whose back or neck muscles are as relaxed as possible.
Your Chiropractor may ask if you are comfortable with acupuncture in conjuction with manipulation for this reason.
A multi-treatment approach to relieving back pain has often has the best success rate, which is why patients often benefit from our use of massage or acupuncture, as well as manipulation. It only costs £1 extra to include acupuncture in normal treatment, and there is no extra charge for other procedures within a standard treatment, so please ask your Chiropractor if this approach may help.
Chiropractic and osteopathy are often confused because both treatments involve manipulation of the body. Chiropractic tends to focus on the muskulo-skeletal system, with emphasis on the spine as the major support structure.
Chiropractors also take a holistic approach and will explore a patient’s lifestyle, habits, mental and emotional health to help make lasting changes to musculo-skeletal problems. Poor posture or trauma for example, can often lead to later back problems.
Whilst we have no x-ray facilities on site, all our Chiropractors are qualified to take and read x rays. If you have recent x-rays or MRI's, please bring them with you to your initial consultation.
In addition, should you require them, your Chiropractor will organise for you to have X-rays taken privately at a local hospital at your convenience. We are currently referring to the Radiology Department at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre and Musgrove Hospital here in Taunton, who are able to offer a high quality service which we use when required.
• As a pain reliever, ice works really well. It temporarily blocks pain signals but much more importantly, it helps to reduce swelling. Several times a day, place an icepack wrapped in a towel on the painful area for up to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can use a bag of frozen peas. During the first few days of home treatment, apply the icepack as often as necessary. Later, you may still want to use ice after exercise or any physical treatment or activity.
• Heat works best to relieve pain when the majority of symptoms are muscular. If heat only provides a very temporary relief, you are likely to be suffering from a joint sprain rather than a muscular strain. Most people tend to use a hot water bottle, but the ice / heat packs that are now for sale can be used in the freezer or microwave. Leave it on for up to 20 minutes. You can repeat this three or four times a day for several days.

'When I gingerly hobbled into your surgery for the 1st time I was still missing my original chiropractor. He was amazing and got me working again. I thought he was a one off, but not long after receiving your technique I knew that good times were around the corner.
I am now 56 years old; my body and its fitness and mobility levels are now in better shape than when I was 30. I work pain free without pain killers and I play tennis and golf (yes I am even playing golf again) with just a couple of pain killers.
The special care, skill and dedication that I have received has given me back my body (literally). For me Chiropractic is a complete study of the best remedies possible at this moment in time.'
